The Build and Engine

When it comes to visual appeal, there are three unique paint schemes. The alloy wheel design, seats and grab handles give 400 X a unique design from its brother, Speed 400. The sturdier metal bash plate, headlight grille, twin barrel exhaust with black cladding, round indicators, tank grips, and step-up seat just stand out in first place. The handguards are plastic and might not be able to survive a fall.

398cc, single-cylinder, Liquid-cooled engine is powerful enough to get you going. The engine produces 39.5 BHP of power which is capable of providing a pretty good bounce.

Seating Position, Suspensions

The 32.9-inch seat is noticeably higher than the Speed 400’s 31.1-inch. The bike delivers an 835mm taller seat, higher stance, and relaxed foot position. The wheelbase has increased by 40mm. The imposing stance helps 400 X to achieve 195mm of ground clearance. The nice and wide handlebar gives enough room for every rider and every terrain.

The tyres appear different from the Speed 400 by a 100/90-19 front and 140/80-17 rear. Suspensions are finely tuned with a 43mm inverted Big Piston fork at the front and Gas mono-shock w/ external reservoir at the back. 400 X fetches a larger 320mm disc to help fight the extra inertia from the larger and mightier front wheel.

Display

You are welcomed by a semi-digital display with an analogue speedometer and an LCD for the gear position, just like the Speed 400. A fully digital display could have made more sense in this price range rather than the provided semi-digital. Switchable ABS is an added feature that is good for off-road. Traction control, ride-by-wire, and USB charging port come as standard.

Speed, Mileage, and service

With a time of 6.92s, it was just 0.2s slower from 0-100kph than the Speed. The bike returns a mileage of 34.7kpl when ridden at a steady 80kph on the highway and 28.07kpl within the city. Triumph delivers a class-leading 10,000 mile / 16,000km service interval for scrambler 400 X.

Ride Quality

At 185kg, it gives effortless maneuvering with good weight distribution and decent weight management. There’s a good amount of torque available from as low as 3,000rpm and you can easily commute even in the city at high gears. The slipper clutch provides a smooth and jerk-free gear transmission. However, there are a bit vibrations you can feel at higher rpm.

Pricing and Final Word

Priced at ` 2.63 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is about 30,000 more than the Speed 400, Triumph has succeeded in differentiating the Scrambler 400 X from its sibling in characteristics. it still feels like a really convincing bid as it offers you enough weapons to leverage both on- and off-roads. Triumph almost gets everything right to cater to the thrills of a young and adventurous customer whether it be with its stunning looks, specifications, or safety features.
