BYD Unveils Its Latest Flagship Luxury Electric Sedan, the U7

BYD’s upscale Yangwang brand has introduced its third production car: a luxury sedan with over 1,000 horsepower, targeting performance variants of BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE. The sedan is scheduled to be available for purchase in China in the second half of 2024 and is based on BYD’s e4 platform, the same platform as the Yangwang U8 SUV and U9 supercar.

The BYD U7 features a drag coefficient of 0.195Cd and boasts more than 1,000hp generated by four electric motors. The design incorporates familiar elements seen in the U9, including C-shaped headlamp graphics, structured flanks, and full-width tail-lights. The Chinese manufacturer claims it to be one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in production, surpassing the i5 and EQE in drag coefficient.

Sharing a family resemblance with other BYD-branded models, including the Seal sedan bound for India, the U7 can accommodate wheels up to 21 inches in diameter. While the specific dimensions are yet to be revealed, reports suggest it could stretch up to 5,200mm in length and 2,000mm in width.

The technical details mention the U7’s four electric motors and its impressive power output. It remains unclear whether the sedan will feature a range-extender powertrain like the U8 or a pure-electric setup like the U9.

BYD has priced the new Yangwang flagship at ¥1 million (approximately Rs 1.2 crore) in China.

In the Indian market, BYD currently sells the Atto3 SUV and retails the E6 MPV. The Seal sedan, positioned as a rival to the Tesla Model 3, is expected to launch later this year.
