During the festive season of 2024, BMW will introduce the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series and its electric variant, the i5, in a long-wheelbase (LWB) form in India. Catering to the chauffeur-driven segment with enhanced rear-seat legroom, the 5 Series LWB will compete directly with the upcoming new-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which has long been available in extended-wheelbase configuration. This launch marks the first time the luxury sedan will be offered in India with an extended wheelbase.

The 5 Series LWB features a wheelbase approximately 110mm longer, providing more space for rear passengers. Notable interior elements include a sizable 31-inch 32:9 screen in the rear seat area, along with reclining rear seats, four-zone climate control, exclusive quilting in the upholstery, and a dual-tone design. The illuminated ‘5’ on the C-pillar is a distinctive feature, glowing white for ICE-powered LWB models and blue, pulsating when charging, for the i5.

In terms of powertrain, the 5 Series is expected to be available in 520Li or 530Li with 2.0-liter turbo-petrol and diesel engines, both equipped with a mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency. The i5 is likely to come in eDrive40 form, featuring a 340hp rear axle-mounted motor driven by an 81.2kWh battery pack, offering a claimed maximum range of 582km.

The interior of the 5 Series and i5 LWB features a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster for the driver and a 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The rear passenger area includes a foldable 31.1-inch 32:9 display, compatible with 5G connectivity, and a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.

In terms of pricing, the 5 Series LWB is expected to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the Rs. 70 lakh to 80 lakh range, while the i5 is anticipated to be priced in the Rs. 90 lakh to 1 crore region (ex-showroom).
