In the realm of capable off-road vehicles in India, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door and the Mahindra Thar stand out as popular choices. This analysis delves into the sales performance of both models over the past three months to determine which one holds greater favor among consumers.
Examining the sales data for the last three months reveals a consistent performance for the Thar, with relatively stable figures. Conversely, the Jimny has experienced a month-on-month decline in sales, with its peak in August at 3104 units. Mahindra’s overall sales have demonstrated an upward trend, attributed to festive season sales and increased production capacity. Under the hood, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 105PS/134Nm, while the Mahindra Thar offers three powertrain options: a 118PS/300Nm 1.5-litre diesel, a 130PS/300Nm 2.2-litre diesel, and a 150PS/320Nm 2-litre turbo petrol engine.
The Jimny offers a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, exclusively with four-wheel drive, while the Thar provides a choice between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, along with rear-wheel and four-wheel
drive options. Pricing for the Thar RWD starts from Rs 10.98 lakh, and for the Thar 4WD, it begins at Rs 14.03 lakh (ex-showroom). The Jimny, available only in a 4WD variant, starts from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-
showroom). Beyond their rivalry, both vehicles also compete with the Force Gurkha in the
market.
