Toyota Kirloskar Motor will temporarily halt the dispatch of the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux utility vehicles in India due to irregularities discovered in the horsepower output certification tests for the diesel engines in these models. These three vehicles constitute nearly one-third of Toyota India’s sales.
The irregularities specifically relate to the “smoothing” of power and torque curves in the engines. However, Toyota reassures that there has been no overstatement or over-claiming of horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values, and there is no impact on emissions or safety.
Despite the suspension of dispatches, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will continue production and accept orders for the Innova, Fortuner, and Hilux. For vehicles already dispatched but not yet delivered to customers, the company will transparently explain the situation before proceeding with registration and delivery.
Toyota Motor Corporation disclosed that during certification testing, the horsepower output performance of engines was measured using electronic control units with different software than that used for mass production. This discrepancy was to ensure smoother and more consistent results. Ten models globally, including six in Japan, utilize the affected engines.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor expressed sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused to customers and stakeholders. The company is collaborating with relevant authorities to reconfirm the data used for the certification of affected vehicles.
Toyota Motor Corporation confirmed that mass-produced products meet engine performance output standards and there is no need to stop using the affected engines or vehicles. However, the subsidiary Toyota Industries Corporation has temporarily suspended shipments of the affected engines pending further investigation and appropriate measures.
The incident may lead to a restructuring of the relevant business and a change in corporate culture. Toyota will continue to support the revitalization of Toyota Industries Corporation’s engine business while ensuring adherence to appropriate certification processes.
